The PlayStation 5 Pro is now a reality. After months of rumors, Sony has just presented the new model of its console, an evolved version of its current PlayStation 5 that will go on sale on November 7, will offer more power, but will also be substantially more expensive (799.99 euros compared to 549.99 for the current model).
The new PlayStation 5 Pro will incorporate a 45% faster graphics processor (GPU), a ray tracing advanced and AI image rescaling technology. These improvements will come at the expense of the disc reader, an optional accessory that users must purchase separately for 119.99 euros.
The main person responsible for the architecture of the console, the American Mark Cerny, has unveiled the new model in a video presentation in which he has presented the characteristics of the device and has shown several games in operation, such as The Last of Us Part 2, Gran Turismo 7 either Horizon Forbidden West. None of the games shown were new.
If until now users of the original PlayStation 5 had to decide whether to prioritize visual quality or performance in games, according to Cerny, one of the objectives of the new model is to combine both modalities thanks to the greater power of the console.
In addition to a 45% faster GPU, the new ray tracing and the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) AI upscaling system, Sony has also announced PS5 Pro Game Boost, a technology that promises to improve the performance of more than 8,500 PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles.
In an interview with the American media Cnet, Cerny stated that the PS5 Pro’s AI rescaling system will also be compatible with the PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset.
What is ray tracing?
Ray tracing (ray tracing in English) is one of the most popular technologies in the field of video games for a few years. It is an algorithm with which it is possible to replicate natural light and reflections realistically within the virtual environment of a video game. This technology simulates the direction, intensity of light and how it interacts with the elements of the environment. Its implementation substantially improves graphic realism, but requires very powerful machines.
In the additional information that the Japanese company has published, it has also been learned that this PlayStation 5 Pro will incorporate a 2TB SSD hard drive, double the capacity of the current model. Likewise, it will also be compatible with the Wi-Fi 7 standard and technologies such as 8K.
First impressions
An update that does not convince
In the absence of testing the PS5 Pro, the considerable price increase compared to the original PS5 is striking (800 euros compared to 550 for the current model). According to Sony, this new model will represent a leap in terms of visual presentation and gaming performance, but the fact that no new title or innovative features have been shown dilutes the feeling of novelty and less justifies the price.
On the other hand, although video game consumption has been trending towards digital for years, the fact that the console does not include a disc reader as standard can be an impediment for many users who continue to opt for physical support. In addition, it can make the transition to the new model more expensive for those people who had the model with a reader.
There is a feeling among many users that the current generation of consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series) has not offered the qualitative leap that Sony and Microsoft promised when they were launched four years ago in the middle of the pandemic. For this reason, the fact that Sony has decided to launch a new version of its console, and what has now been known about it, is causing the indignation of quite a few users.
