With King in its power, Microsoft has made clear its interest in entering the mobile market. Although their plans are not yet entirely clear, Sarah Bond, President of Xbox, has indicated that a Microsoft mobile store will arrive in July. Now it seems that sony you don’t want to be left behind, since they would be working on the creation of a division focused on this market.
Recently, it was discovered a job offer for a mobile platform architect. This has led to speculation about the future of PlayStation in this market. Beyond Fate/Grand OrderSony does not have a property for mobile devices, so this new division would not only be focused on creating a store, but would also be in charge of creating and publishing these types of experiences. This is what was said about it:
“PlayStation Studios Mobile is looking for an experienced software engineer to design the PlayStation platform for developing, publishing and operating free-to-play mobile games. A person in this role will lead the design and implementation of this platform; “You will work in partnership with internal teams, connect mobile games to PlayStation services and ensure that all mobile games meet PlayStation quality standards.”
At the moment, Sony has not issued an official statement about its plans to enter the mobile market with the creation of free-to-play games for its properties. However, With studios like Firesprite and Valkyrie under their belt, they already have the talented teams to make this a reality.. We can only wait to find out more plans in the future.
For a change, Nintendo beat Microsoft and Sony in this department. While the Big N didn’t create a mobile store, it did bring a couple of its most successful properties to this market. Titles like Mario Kart Tour, Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp They turned out to be free-to-play experiences with good commercial success. However, it seems that the Japanese company no longer intends to continue advancing in this section.
Considering Sony’s intention to expand PlayStation’s reach to other markets, It wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that mobile devices would be the next focus after getting a good place on PC. On related topics, a new PSP would be on the way. Likewise, the arrival of Halo on PlayStation seems imminent.
Author’s Note:
Sony’s free-to-play games seem like the antithesis of what PlayStation is doing, but it makes a lot of sense commercially. The company should follow Nintendo’s path and offer small experiences, instead of trying to create something AAA with an ambitious business model.
