Afeela-ike dancing! The Sony Afeela is a Tesla competitor, but without a crazy CEO.
For years we've been waiting and writing about the Apple Car. The rumors continued to circulate, partly because the Cupertino tech brand removed many automotive employees from high positions.
And then didn't do very much with it. The boundary between tech products and cars is getting smaller and smaller, which is not surprising given the overlap. But where Apple cannot (or does not want to) achieve it, it succeeds Sony so yes.
A while ago – just over a year ago – a then very young person wrote @machielvdd with great joy about the electric car from Sony and Honda. It was launched at CES 2023. The CES 2024 is currently underway and the brands are showing a successor to the Sony Afeela concept car. It is again called Sony Afeela.
Sony Afeela
That's not a strange order in the world of cars. First comes a concept, then another concept, and then some prototypes and pre-production copies. We have now arrived at the second draft version. Sony has provided the car with many visual updates to prepare the Afeela for mass production.
The front has been changed with a nicer front and the rear is also different with a thicker bumper. There are also now side mirrors available! The A, B, C and D pillars are now a lot thicker. Somehow the design has some Lucid vibes and that is certainly a compliment. Like many other EVs in this segment, it is a somewhat generic car.
Update for the interior
The interior has also been updated and is also more production ready. As far as we're concerned, that idiotic steering wheel can go straight into the trash bin. Such a yoke has exactly 0 advantages in a large, heavy EV.
The Sony Afeela is equipped with two electric motors that together produce 482 hp. The battery pack is 91 kWh. Fast charging is possible up to 150 kW, not a small amount but certainly not high for a car that is not yet available on the market.
The Afeela is scheduled for 2025. If you can't wait to drive it, we have good news. It is a Japanese car, so the Sony Afeela will be available in Gran Turismo 7, check out the images below:
