Saif Gaddafi, one of the sons of former dictator Moammar Gaddafi, has been barred from Libya’s presidential election on December 24. That message the Arab news channel Al Jazeera. The favorite son of the former leader has been banned from the election by the Election Commission because of his conviction for war crimes committed during the revolution in 2011. During this revolution, his father was murdered.
Some 98 Libyans had registered for the presidential elections. Gaddafi is one of 25 who are not allowed to participate, although this sentence has yet to be confirmed by the judiciary. He was convicted in absentia in 2015 for his part in fighting the 2011 insurgency and is still wanted by the International Criminal Court on suspicion of war crimes. Former Prime Minister Ali Zeidan and politician Nouri Abusahmain were also excluded from the election.
It is not yet clear whether the presidential elections will take place in December at all. The hope is that a new president will end chaos, civil war and economic downturn in Libya. Disputes over electoral rules and who should stand for election threaten to further derail the peace process in the country.
