Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed announced this Monday (27) that he had suspended Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, a day after a conflict between the two over the long-awaited elections in the troubled African country.
“The president has decided to suspend Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and withdraw his powers because he is linked to (cases of) corruption,” the president’s office said in a statement, which accuses the head of government of interfering in the investigation of a case. of land grabbing.
The relationship between the president, known as Farmajo, and Roble is strained, and the latest clash between the two has sparked fears over Somali stability.
Roble on Sunday accused the president of sabotaging the electoral process after Farmajo decided to remove him from organizing the elections, and called for the creation of a new committee to “correct” the problems.
The prime minister accused the president of not wanting to celebrate “reliable elections in the country”.
In April, pro-government fighters and opponents exchanged fire in the streets of Mogadishu after Farmajo extended his term in office without organizing elections.
The constitutional crisis was postponed when Farmajo backed down on the decision and Roble negotiated an electoral calendar.
But in the following months, rivalry between the two politicians again affected the vote and sparked tensions with Western allies, who hope for a peaceful resolution of the process.
Farmajo and Roble agreed to make peace in October and advocated speeding up the electoral process.
Voting for the upper house of Parliament was completed in all states, and voting for the lower house began in November.
Analysts say the political dispute distracts Somalia from its most important problems, such as the insurgency by the Al Shabab group.
The movement, allied with al-Qaeda, was driven out of Mogadishu 10 years ago, but it still controls rural areas and carries out deadly attacks in the capital and other cities.
