Social media | Meta promises to tighten the protection of young people on Instagram and Facebook

Suicide, nudity, alcohol, birth control and dieting are going to be hidden from young people.

Social media giant Meta inform intending to tighten measures to protect young people from harmful content on Instagram and Facebook.

Meta and its services have come under heavy criticism in the United States, where many states consider Meta to be harmful to the mental health of children and young people.

The company announced that it intends to limit the visibility of certain content to young people, even if it comes from their friends or people they follow. Restrictions would apply, for example, to posts dealing with suicide or self-destruction, as well as posts showing nudity.

In addition, young people are going to be protected from seeing posts that discuss, for example, tobacco products, weapons, alcohol, birth control, cosmetic surgery and weight loss.

Meta also plans to make posts related to suicides and self-harm harder to find.

The company's leaked internal memos have revealed that Meta has long been aware of the harm that its services could have caused to the mental health of young people.

The restrictions will apply to young people under the age of 18.
