Liverpool manager Arne Slot has said the team’s opening Champions League match with a 3-1 win over AC Milan was more important than his birthday. The match coincided with Slot’s 46th birthday, but the focus was on opening the team’s Champions League campaign with a win.
Slot expressed his happiness that the team was able to return to winning ways, after the shock loss to Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League last Saturday. Slot said: “I have said many times that it is normal to celebrate your birthday with your friends and family, but this was a good alternative, to play against a special club for Liverpool and the Dutch fans.”
“The way we won, we went down after five minutes and the defeat to Nottingham Forest was still in our minds, so it was good to see the team come back and win 3-1,” he added.
“I think we were a bit disappointed with the result against Nottingham Forest, we had eight corners and didn’t score,” he added.
“We felt that after all the practice we had put in on set pieces, one of the players would get his reward. We were comfortable with the ball and one of our attempts hit the bar in open play, so we needed to score from set pieces,” he said.
Slot also expressed his happiness with his team’s ability to come back after conceding an early goal.
He said: “In the first four or five minutes we lost the ball because of bad choices we made, and the opposing team was able to launch counterattacks, but after that we imposed our control over the match more, and this did not lead to the opposing team creating counterattacks.”
