And the American network “CNN” reported that a new study concluded that undergoing sleep training helps prevent depression that affects adults, especially adults.
What is meant by sleep training is for a person to undergo behavioral and cognitive exercises that help him get rid of bad habits, thus making his body and mind ready for sleep.
The results of the study were published in the “Gamma” scientific journal specialized in psychiatry, on Wednesday.
The study was an experiment on two groups of people over the age of 60 who suffer from insomnia and do not suffer from depression.
The experiment lasted for two months, the study worked to educate the members of one of the two groups about sleep, such as talking about the importance of healthy sleep and the necessary procedures before going to bed, and the effects of stress on the quality of sleep, but there was no one to help them in this training, they had to receive information and train their affairs without interference from researchers.
As for the second group, they received behavioral sleep training by trained therapists.
After the end of the experiment, the study then followed the cases of 291 people for 3 years on a monthly basis, and the participants were asked about symptoms of depression.
Study author and professor of psychiatry, Michael Irwin, says the group that received coach-assisted therapy training often kept the training going into their lives, and the results were good.
He added that about a third of people in this group did not suffer from insomnia, while the group that received sleep education showed “modest results in improving and treating insomnia, and the improvement was not permanent.”
He considered that the cognitive and behavioral therapy carried out by a person is effective, because the coach helps the person to prepare himself.
Charles Reynolds, professor of geriatric psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, who was not involved in the study, said the study’s findings show an entirely new way to tackle the growing problem of depression.
In the past, many studies have shown that insomnia is a major risk factor for depression.
