Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists need greater protection and it is precisely for this reason that Skoda pays particular attention to their safety during the development phases of the vehicle. “The safety of pedestrians and people in two-wheeled vehicles is always a priority when developing new Skoda models. – said Radek Urbiš, Head of Vehicle Safety Development at Skoda – A path that starts from vehicle design, continues with specific physical tests and includes the development of active driving assistance systems that prevent accidents from occurring “.
The excellent results obtained in the Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Program) benchmark tests underline the high standards of pedestrian protection of Skoda models. Both Nuova Fabia and the 100% electric SUV Enyaq iVin fact, they were the best vehicles in their respective categories for the year 2021. During the development phase of a new Skoda model, more than 200 pedestrian safety tests are carried out. The tests, which are carried out at the Aurel CZ laboratory, focus on the parts of the human body that are most vulnerable in the event of an accident. They are carried out with devices that allow, for example, to simulate an impact between the head of an adult or a child and the hood or windshield, or between the thigh and the hood and between the shin and the front bumper.
Also thanks to the experience gained through these tests, the new Skoda models are designed with the utmost attention to the protection of pedestrians. For example, in order for a possible impact to be cushioned as much as possible by the deformation of the hood, there must always be sufficient space between components such as the engine, the shock absorbers, the hinge and the hood latch, or the wiper arms. The corner of the engine hood is designed to optimize safety and is devoid of sharp corners or non-essential rigid structures. Pedestrian protection is also improved thanks to the use of specific materials that absorb kinetic energy, placed in front of the steel crosspiece behind the front bumper.
In addition, Skoda models can count onimportant contribution of active assistance systems which support the driver in avoiding collisions with pedestrians or cyclists. These include the Front Assistant with recognition of pedestrians and cyclists or the Collision Avoidance Assistant, which amplifies a possible avoidance maneuver to avoid a collision. In addition, when a door is opened, the Exit Warning system is able to warn the driver and passengers if there are vehicles, cyclists or motorcyclists arriving from behind.
