That of Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic it is probably the main production plant for Skoda. The Bohemian carmaker currently assembles the Octavia and the electric Enyaq iV in the mother country (as well as battery systems for the MEB EV platform in the first facility of its type outside Germany), but soon the list of models built among the friendly walls could lengthen: it seems that Skoda will also produce cars for other Volkswagen Group brands in the coming years, with the aim of intensifying the electrification program.
However, this will not be the only aspect on which the expansion of the Mlada Boleslav plant will focus. We mentioned before in fact a new structure dedicated to the production of batteries: is capable of assembling more than 255,000 battery packs per year, which will both be made available to locally built electric vehicles and sent to other factories for use in Audi, Cupra and Volkswagen electric models. The objective of the Bohemian carmaker is to increase the production capacity of batteries by 125,000 units per year by the end of 2023. However, Skoda’s leaders are not satisfied, and not only aspire to develop a battery recycling plant in Czech Republic, but also to ensure that the mother country becomes the country chosen for the realization of one of the 6 European Gigafactories of batteries promised by the Volkswagen Group.
“The production of battery cells is not only important for Skoda, but also for the Czech Republic – commented Michael Oeljeklaus, head of production and logistics at Skoda – We believe our motherland is the ideal for battery production: we have many materials and suppliers here, and good traffic links in Europe, so we will be able to supply other Volkswagen Group facilities. The new technology required of factories to produce electric vehicles and the Volkswagen Group’s increased use of the shared MEB platform have changed the way we look at manufacturing usage in the future. THE factors that affect electric mobility really alter car manufacturing and how we approach it. And that means we may not be just a single-brand manufacturing plant like we are now. “
