A more than positive first part of the year is driving for Skoda which from January to September managed to reduce losses despite the shortage of semiconductors. The Bohemian car manufacturer recorded a slight decline, with -2.9% of registered cars (700,700 units sold) compared to the same period in 2020. The Volkswagen Group brand is so successful generate an operating profit of 900 million euros while the turnover for the first three quarters of 2021 amounted to 13.329 billion euros, with a sales profit of 6.8%. For Skoda, the biggest challenge will be facing the fourth and last quarter of the year, with the chip crisis that will force the Mlada Boleslav brand to significantly reduce production.
As for registrations in Europe, in the western area of the Old Continent, Škoda recorded 326,400 deliveries in the first nine months of the year, 4.3% more than the same period last year. In Germany, its main market, the company recorded 104,600 customer deliveries in the first three quarters of 2021 (January to September 2020: 113,200 vehicles; -7.6%). In Central Europe, the company delivered 132,600 vehicles in the first nine months of the year (January to September 2020: 134,700 vehicles; -1.5%). In its domestic market, the Czech Republic, deliveries increased by 1.1% to 63,000 vehicles (January to September 2020: 62,300 vehicles). In Eastern Europe – excluding Russia – Škoda increased deliveries to customers by 8.6%, reaching 29,500 vehicles between January and September (January to September 2020: 27,200 vehicles).
In collaboration with the social partner Kovo and the suppliers, Škoda is working to overcome the current challenges. The main priority is and remains the safeguarding of jobs in the long term. This year, the company expects to fail to produce around 250,000 vehicles by the end of the year due to missing components. The company anticipates that the semiconductor supply situation will stabilize early next year and gradually improve in the second half of 2022.
