If you’re looking for a job that’s either fully remote or offers additional remote work opportunities, employers tend to want certain skills, says FlexJobs’ lead career expert, Tony Vrana, who notes that “you’ll need to include a number of skills on your resume to signal that you have what it takes to succeed.”
Here are three skills to include and how to present them, according to a report by the American network “CNBC”, which was reviewed by the “Sky News Arabia Economy” website.
communication
One of the essential skills to include on your resume is communication skills.
“I think when you don’t see each other, when you don’t notice nonverbal cues, when you don’t have normal conversations in the office, having the ability to interact with others and feel how to build understanding and how to initiate communication with your team members is important,” says Vrana. “It helps things run smoothly on the team.”
organization
Organization is another key skill to highlight if you are looking for remote work.
“If you want to do your job well while working away from your team, you definitely have to be organized in your space and able to deliver the outcome they’re looking for,” says Vrana. “You have to stay focused on the task.”
When writing your resume, highlight the ways you’ve accomplished your team’s goals while working from home. Consider including a line in your resume summary like “Seamlessly prioritized key tasks to achieve organizational goals and KPIs.”
Flexibility
Finally, flexibility is essential when working remotely.
“Often, job postings talk about the need to be able to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment,” says Vrana. Use cues from the description to figure out what the employer is looking for.
As with organization, you can include a line in your summary like “Adapts quickly and is flexible in fast-paced and changing environments.
Time management first
Economist Yassin Ahmed said that there are a set of basic skills that remote workers need to achieve success and efficiency in performing their tasks. He stressed that the first of these skills is time management, noting that “the ability to organize time and set priorities is the foundation, as the individual must manage his day and complete tasks without direct supervision.”
He added that discipline and adherence to deadlines are essential, “as remote workers must respect deadlines without the need for constant supervision from the manager.”
As for effective communication, he explained that “the worker must have the ability to communicate quickly and clearly via email, work communication applications, and virtual meeting tools,” noting the importance of technical skills, saying: “Knowledge of using remote work tools such as project management applications, video conferencing, and cloud storage services is essential to getting tasks done smoothly.”
He also stressed the need to manage stress, explaining that “the ability to deal with the challenges and pressures associated with remote work, such as feeling isolated or working irregular hours, is a vital skill.”
Regarding problem solving, Yassin noted that “remote workers need to be able to deal with technical or operational issues independently, as immediate support is not available as in traditional work environments.”
He added that cooperation and teamwork are important despite working independently, explaining that “the ability to collaborate with the team remotely and exchange ideas is essential to achieving common goals.”
Finally, Yassin stressed the importance of continuous learning, saying: “The ability to develop skills and learn new tools and techniques helps workers adapt to the rapid changes in the remote work environment.”
Three main skills
In turn, Director of the Vision Center for Studies, Bilal Shuaib, stated that basic skills for remote work have become an urgent necessity in light of the rapid digital transformation witnessed by the world, especially after the Corona pandemic. Shuaib pointed out that financial technology and technological progress have pushed government agencies and the private sector to adopt remote work models in order to improve performance and reduce costs. He also pointed out the importance of individual skills in this type of work, whether working within companies or for freelance work.
Shoaib explained that the first skill required is “technology proficiency,” noting that the person must be familiar with modern technological tools and new applications that remote work relies on. He added that technology has become a craft that requires knowledge of how to use it effectively.
Secondly, Shoaib stressed the importance of “self-discipline,” explaining that the absence of direct supervision requires an individual to have a high ability to organize his time and manage his tasks independently, where the main motivation is self-commitment to accomplish the work.
Thirdly, Shoaib stressed the need for “passion for technology” and the profession, saying: “Working remotely requires constant monitoring of technological developments, because the pace of change is rapid. One must be constantly aware of changes in his field, to ensure keeping up with the market and taking advantage of available opportunities.”
In conclusion, Shoaib emphasized that technological savvy, self-discipline, and a passion for professional development are the factors that will enable individuals to succeed in a remote work environment.
