What man?

“Just fine.”

What can you expect from this weekend in Salpausselkä?

“I don’t know. We’ll see.”

Like the beginning of the interview above shows, the hyper diamond of Finnish cross-country skiing Niko Anttola doesn’t really chatter to warm himself up.

Anttola, 20, prefers to let actions speak for themselves. It was last seen in Planica’s World Cup relay, where the cool-headed anchor became Finland’s hero.

However, the adult medal was just a bonus in Anttola’s season. The main goal of the winter was the World Junior Championships, of which Anttola won gold (10 km y) and silver (20 km y).

“Of course, this season has been a success. The intention was to do well in the Junior World Championships and we did well there. Then there were a few really big races even after that”, says Anttola.

“It has gone very well. It has been a fairly steady performance the whole season. There are no big flops. I am quite satisfied.”

Through Anttola, there is still time left for the World Cup weekend in Lahti and the World Cup skiing in Inari. Participation in the Rovaniemi Suomen Cup finals is still open.

In the development of endurance athletes, conscript service hits a critical seam with the knowledge of twenty-year-olds. Many skiers have stumbled into this pitfall, which has slowed development.

“It doesn’t scare me that way. I have talked to some extent with my friends about how things have been going there. Otherwise, you can’t influence it much other than a good attitude.

The service period at the sports school is either half a year or one year. Anttola can’t yet guess how fulfilling his civic duty will affect his next season.

“It’s hard to say. Really hard to predict what will happen.”

When asked, Lindholm gives instructions for the ski diamond.

“It’s not worth trying to train too much, for example, on weekends off, when there are so many of those jobs in the service.”

“You can win quite a bit if you do too much. It can go too far,” says Lindholm.

Lindholm is also scheduled to participate in training camps with sports school students. However, the laid-back sergeant isn’t going to make an inferior national team member hard.

“I don’t ever need to be bossed around. We’re just friends,” Lindholm laughs.

Finland the current number one name in men’s skiing Iivo Niskanen also completed his conscript service in the Kainuu brigade.

Niskanen feels that the service did not give him a back pack as an athlete.

“It wasn’t that kind of troll. I was able to maintain my level and even raise it. During my military year, I was a substitute at the World Championships (2013). As far as I remember, I was able to compete at a pretty good level,” Niskanen recalls.

“Now that entering the service is still a little early, an athlete of Niko’s caliber will be able to implement the plan perfectly well after the basic training period and practice his own profession.”
