This is the opinion of the Chairman of the Cross-Country Skiing Committee of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Vegard Ulvang, who is the Norwegian Olympic champion.
Ulvang shares his views on the Swedish-Norwegian Skiddnytt podcast, which is being refereed in Finland Sustainability.fi website.
The cross-country skiing committee, chaired by Ulvang, makes decisions related to the rules of the sport and, among other things, the skiing practices.
“If looking at all the factors involved, such as the economics of equipment and the lubrication challenges associated with traditional skiing, I believe we are moving towards one skiing in the long run, ”says Ulvang in the podcast According to Endurance Sports.
According to UIvang, two ways of skiing, traditional and free, have been maintained because everyone wants it.
“My committee is practically 100 percent supportive of the two types of skiing,” Ulvang says.
According to Ulvang, there are strong feelings associated with the traditional way of skiing.
“It’s part of our history and our roots. I can also add that it helps us stand out from combined and biathlon. ”
Traditional that is, Pertsa is a more popular skiing method among amateur skiers. In cross-country skiing, however, the traditional one is more complicated than before, Ulvang said.
“You need to consider the weather, the route, how much grip you have on your skis and you need to have competitive skis for even pushing as well. We know that on many lines, straight-ahead is faster. These things will not disappear over time. In a few years, there will be new generations that have not grown up with the traditional way of skiing in the same way as our current skiers. I believe that at some point, there will be only one way to go skiing – the one that is the fastest and does the least work for the jury, ”Ulvang argues.
However, he notes that among enthusiasts, the traditional remains “forever”.
