Skiing Iivo Niskanen is on different lines about the future of traditional skiing than the Norwegian sports boss: “Cycling-like trust in one’s own sport could be appropriate for many decision-makers”

Niskanen, who started his competition with two international victories, thinks that cross-country skiing would become too one-sided if the traditional way of skiing were abandoned.

Finland first skier Iivo Niskanen Norway, one of the most influential leaders in the sport, is not in line with the Vegard Ulvangin with.

Ulvang, chairman of the International Ski Federation’s (FIS) cross-country skiing committee, said in a statement published last week. In the Skidnytt podcast believing that the traditional way of skiing will move away from competitive skiing in the future.

Niskanen reminds that the topic has been on the agenda before.

“One could imagine that the traditional one won’t go anywhere in the next ten years. There’s always a lot of talk, and stuff is raffle if a decision maker wants to express things like that, but it certainly won’t happen right away if you ask the athletes. As a rule, the team is in the position of the traditional, ”says Niskanen, who has achieved the most valuable victories of his career with the traditional.

Thence Niskanen agrees with Ulvang, the three-time Olympic champion of 1992, that most ski countries want to maintain the traditions of the sport and preserve the traditional way of skiing.

Ulvang admitted that the cross-country skiing committee he chaired “has virtually 100 percent support for the two types of skiing,” traditional and free.

“Perhaps there have been too many attempts to renew. Such a cyclical reliance on one’s own sport could be appropriate for many decision-makers, ”says Niskanen, referring to road cycling, where many major competitions, such as the French Tour, have retained their very essence for a long time and also the public interest.

If the traditional way of skiing disappeared from cross-country skiing, the sport would become unnecessarily one-sided in Niskanen’s opinion.

“Of course, racing trips could bring variations. I feel that in the final games, the big crowd and the followers end up in the traditional, as it has been before. In the World Cup, traditional competitions declined at times, but recently free and traditional competitions have gone 50-50. I think at the moment FIS wants to keep another style on the frame. ”

Niskanen reminds that, for example, in the World Cup, the traditional 50-kilometer race at Holmenkollen in Oslo is especially appreciated among skiers.

“If you ask which individual race you would like to win, surely most skiers would say Holmenkollen in their fifties. That says something that is valued among athletes, ”says Niskanen.

Last over the weekend, Niskanen began his competitive season, which culminated in the Beijing Olympics, with two victories.

He defeated most of Russia’s best skiers in both the traditional and freestyle 15 kilometers at the Muonion Olos International Artillery Championships.

At the end of the weekend, Niskanen said on Facebook that he will compete next time in the last weekend in November at the Ruka mc opening.

This means that Niskanen will miss the Finnish Cup competitions in Taivalkoski next weekend.
