A fall with tragic consequences triggered dismay in French winter sports: 18-year-old Margot Simond was fatal on Thursday in a training accident for a ski-course competition, as the French Ski Association FFS announced. The accident occurred in the winter sports town of Val d’Isère in the French Alps.
The Simond, from Savoyen, fell shortly before 1 p.m. on a training trip in the Bellevarde ski area, reported the radio station “ICI Pays de Savoie”, citing the public prosecutor. Attempts to resuscinate the emergency doctor who immediately hung up were unsuccessful. An investigation should clarify the closer circumstances.
Simond only became a French junior champion in slalom in March and trained as part of a course event at the Red Bull Alpine Park in Val d’Isère. The event combines “the traditional slalom with freestyle elements and thus creates a unique course,” it said in the advance notice.
The competition on Saturday was canceled by Slalom Olympic champion Clément Noel (27). According to “Ici Pays de Savoie”, Simond was part of a selection that was to take part in the event for the first time.
“The French Ski Association, the Savoy Skikomitee, the Sportclub Les Saisies and the entire ski community are deeply affected and sad about Margot’s death,” wrote the National Ski Association at X. “They want to express their deepest sympathy for their family and their relatives and ensure their full support in these particularly difficult moments.”

The World Association FIS also condoluced. They had “experienced with great grief of the tragic death of Margot Simond, a promising young athlete,” it said. FIS also promised to offer the family their full support “in this incredibly difficult time”.
This winter it is the third fatal training accident in the young area of the international ski scene. In March 2025, 18-year-old Marco Degli Uomini died in a training accident in the Carnic Alps in the Friuli-Julisch Veneto region in northeastern Italy. In October 2024, 19-year-old Matilde Lorenzi died on the Schnalstaler glacier in South Tyrol, also after a training session.
