Yuto Horigome is the first ever Olympic skateboarding champion. The world champion from Japan won the Tokyo final in the street discipline with 37.18 points, Japan’s third gold in these games. The Brazilian Kelvin Hoefler landed in second place, Jagger Eaton (USA) secured bronze. German athletes did not start in the Ariake Urban Sports Park. US superstar Nyjah Huston only finished seventh.
In the run-up, Horigome (22) was sixth in his hometown. There were two runs of 45 seconds each, after which the athletes were able to show five individual tricks. In the end, a total of four performances were included in the overall ranking. The judges assess the difficulty, speed, originality and execution as well as the composition of the runs.
The German focus is primarily on Lilly Stoephasius, who is only 14 years old. The Berliner is the youngest German Olympic participant and, like Tyler Edtmayer (20) from Lenggries, qualified in the men’s park discipline. It is Stoephasius’ turn on August 4th, Edtmayer is challenged a day later. In the street category, no German athlete was able to buy a ticket for Tokyo.
