A group of climbers was hit by an avalanche of snow, ice and rock
At least six people have lost their lives, ten more are missing and eight were injured this Sunday after the detachment of part of a glacier from the Marmolada mountain, in the Dolomites (the Italian Alps), according to a spokeswoman for the services of emergency. “The balance is still provisional,” said Michela Canova.
Two of the injured were transferred to the Belluno hospital, another to Treviso and five to Trento, the same source indicated without offering more details about the nationality of the victims. Several helicopters participate in the rescue and surveillance operations.
“An avalanche of snow, ice and rock reached the access road at a time when several groups of climbers were there, some of whom were swept away,” he explained. “The exact number of those affected is still unknown,” he added.
La Marmolada is the largest glacier in the Dolomites, located in the eastern Alps.
