Well done Norris. Despite everything. He gritted his teeth fighting with himself after having incredibly distanced his rivals. A difficult race despite Lando having managed to take off immediately, with a departure – his bogeyman – textbook and a crazy pace throughout the race. Two contacts with the wallsfrom halfway onwards, gave him a wake-up call, as at a certain point he was almost falling asleep (so to speak, of course) in the face of an advantage over his rivals that was increasing dramatically, perhaps well beyond his expectations. However, in the double collision he did not suffer any damage, indeed, after the second (slight) one he even set the fastest lap of the race, but was overtaken on the last lap by Daniel Ricciardo’s sprint.
So all is well for Lando Norris, all good for McLaren who continues to impress on any type of circuit and in projection he could behave like this until the end, with an exciting conclusion in the sprint with Verstappen for the world championship. There are six races left, Max has a 52-point margin over Lando, the games are still open, even if Singapore has seen the return of a brilliant and fast Red Bull. Not as much as McLaren, but on par with Ferrari and better than Mercedes in a way that hasn’t happened in a long time. Good news for Verstappentherefore, considering that from now on, theoretically, he should find circuits more favorable to his car. But the second place in Singapore, 20”9 from Norris, is very important: a defeat that however relaunches him.
The third step of the podium went to Oscar Piastri, sacrificed by a mediocre qualifying and a race strategy that was, let’s say, prudent. Then Russell, fourth, was very good at fending off Leclerc’s attacks in the last five laps.
Leclerc fifth and Sainz seventh are the mirror of Ferrari: not exactly brilliant placings but mistakes have to be paid for. Charles and Carlos made a mistake in qualifying (tyres too cold, to what extent is the team responsible?) and started on the grid from ninth and tenth place, not exactly ideal on a track where overtaking is very difficult. Despite everything, Leclerc and Sainz did not lower their guard and From halfway through the race onwards the Monegasque kept the same pace as Norris (but he gave up in the end) and Verstappen, times in hand. Which is to say that second and third place were very accessible. A great opportunity wastedwhen Ferrari, after the triumph in Monza, was almost certain that the encore would come in Baku and/or Singapore. Other hopes postponed, other expectations, other disappointments.
