Nervous system diseases represent one of the major health challenges worldwide: raise awareness among the population aboutimportance of prevention and treatment of neurological diseases and on the fundamental role of the neurologist is therefore the main objective of National Neurology Day which, promoted by the Italian Neurology Society – Sin, will be celebrated throughout Italy next Saturday 5 October. Between 1990 and 2021, neurological disorders were the leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of death globally, with nine million deaths per year. In fact, stroke, dementia, headaches, epilepsy and over 1,400 genetic and rare diseases afflict millions of people and are of particular importance in Italy where, due to the aging of the population, we are witnessing an increase in diseases age-related neurological and mental disorders.
In our country – reports a Sin note – over 7 million people suffer from migraines, 12 million suffer from sleep disorders and over 2,000,000 people suffer from cognitive impairment or dementia, of which 720,000 from Alzheimer’s disease; There are 800,000 patients living with the disabling consequences of stroke, a pathology which every year records 180,000 new cases, 500,000 cases with epilepsy and 400,000 those affected by movement disorders including Parkinson’s disease.
“Only through knowledge of the symptoms of neurological pathologies by the population and timely access to the specialist for an early diagnosis, will it be possible to combat these diseases which continue to increase – states the president of Sin Alessandro Padovani – For some of them scientific research has produced enormous progress that has changed patients’ perspectives, for others prevention still remains the most powerful weapon. A fundamental aspect in the fight against nervous system pathologies certainly remains the collaboration between all the actors involved such as neurologists, local doctors and politicians , decision makers, caregivers and patients who can each contribute their part.”
To urge the population to understand the importance and role of Neurology specialists in the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases, the Sin planned a morning completely dedicated to the population: Saturday 5 October from 9.00 to 13.00 by calling 0315620533, it will be possible to have a telephone conversation with the Sin specialistswho will be available to provide information and answer doubts and questions about the various pathologies. This year too, awareness will be raised through Sin’s social channels (Facebook,
Also on the occasion of Neurology Day, Friday October 4th in Milan Sin organizes, in collaboration with Sda Bocconi and Biogen, the meeting “Neurology and the national health system: what future”which represents an opportunity to reflect on the future of Neurology within the NHS, in a context in which challenges are increasing, as are opportunities for innovation and improvement. They will attend the meetingin addition to President Sin and other representatives of the scientific society, Mario Del Vecchio – Affiliate professor of Government, Health and Not for Profit at the Sda Bocconi School of Management and Valeria Tozzi – Associate professor of Practice of Government Health and Not for Profit Division at the Sda Bocconi School of Management.
To give greater resonance to its appeal, this year the Sin invites Italian municipalities to carry out a symbolic and visible gesture: Saturday 5 October illuminate a building, a public space, a monument or a representative structure in blue to raise awareness of neurological diseases and express closeness to patients and caregivers, reminding everyone how important it is to contact a neurologist.
