Atlético de Madrid faces Betis in the League this Sunday in what will undoubtedly be an exciting duel for Champions League positions between the third and fifth-placed teams in the table.
The rojiblancos have two consecutive victories and they know that they need to continue on that line to finish the season in the top four and beating a direct rival would be a big step. However, Atleti have shown some shortcomings that Simeone cannot allow to come to light again.
Atlético de Madrid will travel to Seville with five casualties, Wass, Cunha, Kondogbia, Savic and Hermoso, the last three fell this week. In addition to having a very weak defense, Simeone will not be able to count on two men who could give him strength and presence in midfield like Wass and especially Kondogbia.
It seems that Atlético de Madrid has left behind its failures in defense and in the last two games it has managed to keep a clean sheet, but even so it is not the solid and reliable Atleti that we all remember and it continues to concede chances.
Atlético de Madrid’s objective is to finish LaLiga in the top four to be in the next edition of the Champions League and at the moment that is not happening. The rojiblancos are fifth and they know that they cannot fail against a direct rival, even if they won 3-0 in the first round match. If Atleti is obliged to win a match, this is it.
The last three games for Atlético de Madrid have been really good and we have seen the best face of the rojiblanco team. However, throughout the season they have been able to show us the best and the worst in the same game, and against Betis they will need to be focused from the start of the game until the final whistle.
Betis is a rival that should not be underestimated. Pellegrini has built a great team with players who are giving the best version of themselves and has implemented an idea and a game philosophy that is making Betis have one of the best seasons in its history. And besides, they have just qualified for the Cup final and that is an extra dose of energy for the Betis.
