Minister of Mines and Energy says that the completion of the nuclear plant will be on the agenda of the CNPE meeting on December 4
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveiradeclared this Wednesday (2.Oct.2024) that the government will decide on the completion of the Angra 3 nuclear plant in 2024. In conversation with journalists, he stated that the topic will be part of the agenda of the meeting of the CNPE (National Energy Policy Council) scheduled for December 4th.
Silveira said that the government is still awaiting a reassessment of the study of BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) which pointed out in September to a loss of R$21 billion if the Union abandons the project and a cost of R$23 billion if construction of the plant progresses.
“We waited for the BNDES studies to be ready, to analyze the entire situation in the chain, and based on the government’s strategic vision, we will propose this to the CNPE. Still this year, for decision. BNDES is still making adjustments and reflecting on the numbers in the study that was delivered”he said. “[O governo] It will consider what has already been invested there, how much it costs to bury that investment, how much it costs to stop promoting this chain and how much we can gain from it. This year we will still have to submit this to the CNPE”.
Silveira’s desire is for the plant to be completed. In August, the Minister of Mines and Energy declared in the Chamber of Deputies that he would take the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) a plan to complete the work and that it no longer mattered to talk about values. The statement was made before the conclusion of the study by the state development bank.
“There is no need to discuss the cost-benefit of Angra 3. I will take the continuation of the works on Angra 3 to the CNPE. We will not carry this mausoleum to serve as a visitation, seeing it as a failure of management by the Brazilian government”said Silveira at the time.
Despite not having stated again that he will carry out the completion of the plant without caring about the values, Silveira declared that it would be a waste for the country not to complete the project. The minister compared uranium reserves in Brazil to a “pre-salt” and that it is necessary to advance this high added value chain.
“Brazil abandoned the nuclear chain. And it is a great potential that we have. Brazil owns the entire nuclear chain. We have an abundance of uranium. Uranium associated with coal, with diamond, with phosphate. We have pure uranium in Caetité. We have more than one uranium pre-salt in Brazil, of even more value”he declared.
