Signify, a world leader in lighting, has presented its new line of solar lighting at its factory in Valladolid, the company’s largest outdoor lighting plant in southern Europe and where road, sports, tunnel and solar luminaires are manufactured with the latest LED technology.

The launch of the solar lighting range is a clear commitment by the company to sustainability and energy efficiency since allows you to achieve 100% energy savings by taking advantage of a natural resource such as solar energy: The company, a giant, with total sales in 2023 of 6.7 billion euros, 32,000 employees and a presence in more than 70 countries, thus reinforces its Valladolid plant.

Signify’s relationship with Valladolid, with innovation and sustainability as its fundamental pillars, is long. The current factory was created in 1980 by Indal, a pioneering Spanish company in the development of LED technology, founded in 1950 and which It was acquired by the Philips group in 2012. Subsequently, in 2016, the Philips lighting division would be separated from the group, becoming Signify, a world leader in lighting. During this time, the factory facilities have been expanded and modernized to reach the current 27,000 m2 space.
85% is exported
Currently, of all the luminaires manufactured at the Signify plant each year, around 85% is exported around the world. This represents a commitment to the Spain brand internationally, as well as the contribution to regional employment.
The luminaires that come out of this plant have been installed in cities such as Madrid, Algeciras and in countries such as the United Kingdom or Singapore; in addition to stadiums such as the Riyadh Air Metropolitano of Atlético de Madrid, the Ajax in Holland or Juventus in Italy, inter alia.
“The Valladolid factory is the largest Signify outdoor lighting plant in southern Europe. Through the products we manufacture, we want to help decarbonize and improve the habitability of urban environments with what we know how to do best: lighting” said Arturo González, director of the Signify factory in Valladolid.
They work in the factory 130 employees which rise to 190 in times of greatest production between April and May, and to which are added other 150 Saeta workersthe group’s foundry plant, located in the Polígono San Cristóbal, also in Valladolid.
In the factory, more than 4,000 components are used for the 55 different luminaires that come out of its production lines, 20% tailored to what customers request. With a high degree of automation, the plant is the only one of the multinational company that makes the solar panels that it then mounts on its lights, an activity that it wants to extend to those located around the world.
Important local and regional personalities have attended the event, such as the territorial delegate of Valladolid of the Junta de Castilla y León, Raquel Lourdes Alonso, or the mayor of Valladolid, Jesús Julio Carnero, who have highlighted the importance of the Signify factory for the local economy and job creation, as well as the commitment of both institutions to sustainability and their support for technological innovation in Valladolid and Castilla y León.
Precisely, the first mayor of Valladolid advanced that the City Council will provide public lighting to the sidewalk and bike path of Cañada Real through energy-efficient, low-consumption solar lights, manufactured by the company Signify in its new production line in Valladolid.
Carnero explained that they will opt for a model that works through solar collection with panel and battery storage, which, in his opinion, will facilitate the energy efficiency of the road lighting system and the responsible use of green energy.
The mayor pointed out that this action is contemplated in the participatory budget projects approved in 2023to be executed in the years 2024 and 2025.
The estimated budget for the installation of the luminaires and their foundation It will be around 75,000 euros (VAT included). By operating autonomously using solar energy, it avoids having to carry out connection and channeling work for the electrical supply network on the road.
