The president of Cantabria, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, announced this Friday that the Sierrallana Hospital, in Torrelavega, will have its Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit in early 2025 which will be attended by 26 professionals. Furthermore, he has advanced that During this term the project for the new hospitalization building will be undertaken.
“We must not stop. The improvement and expansion of this hospital has to continue and will continue,” The president has guaranteed during the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the hospital, where she has reiterated the “unbreakable” commitment of her Executive to public health, with 73 million euros more in the budget in 2025 – “an extra injection that has enormous impact and meaning “- and the greater volume of resources allocated to the recognition and improvement of the working conditions of SCS personnel.
As specified, the Acute Psychiatric Unit will have two specialists in psychiatry, one in psychology, seven mental health nursing professionals and a supervisor. In addition, it will progressively incorporate six auxiliary nursing care technicians, six guards, an occupational therapist, a social worker and an administrative assistant.
“Excellence is in the DNA of Sierrallana and my Government is going to live up to it so that this hospital continues to be the great pillar that it is for thousands of patients and their families,” said Buruaga, who has considered this center “a key and irreplaceable piece of the public health service”, and its professionals “the greatest value of the hospital”.

The Sierrallana Hospital was inaugurated on November 1, 1994 as a regional hospital, with 350 professionals, as recalled by the president, who have currently grown to around 1,500 who serve a population of 170,000 inhabitants in the western and southern areas of Cantabria.
