The Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Lahti, Tampere Philharmonic, Tapiola Sinfonietta and Oulu Sinfonia have committed to invite the finalist of their choice to perform as the orchestra’s soloist.

In addition, the winner has been promised free mentoring from the chairman of the jury Sakari from Oramolta and the 1995 Sibelius winner From Pekka Kuusisto.

Winner Yang started playing the violin at the age of five.

“There were no musicians in my family, but my parents always listened to a lot of classical music. Mom took me to a music store and there happened to be a note in our home crab where a violin student offered classes. I attended his classes for 2-3 years and he kept my interest very good, ”he told HS while results were still awaited.

At the age of 8, he won third prize in a music competition. He continued to teach many Finns from South Korea to Boston Miriam Friedin doctrine.

“Thanks to his teaching, I won the Paganini competition in 2015. I thought there was no need to compete after winning the Paganini, which was somewhat true in the United States.”

In Europe, it was different, he noticed.

“I came to Hanns Eisler College of Music Antje Weithaasin as a student to broaden my perspective in 2019. But then there was a pandemic. ”

The pandemic caused despair and I feel lost, the winner says.

“I needed a goal, and this competition was like that for my professor, too. I drowned in the software and reached the six-hour practice time again during the day. Besides, I wanted to immerse myself more deeply in Sibelius’ music, and the program for this competition was perfect for that purpose, too. ”

Even before this victory, Yang’s calendar looked good. For example, he will have a solo gig with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinina Festival, a festival gig in Poland as well, and a recital in Genoa.

It is already clear that demand in Europe will increase to a new level with this victory.

Competition the level was excellent and in corridor talks many experts considered it higher than the last couple of times.

“The standard was so dazzlingly high that it made the work of our judges difficult,” says the violinist who won the Sibelius Competition in 1985. Ilja Kaler.

“All the finalists are technically great, so the style and taste were largely decisive,” he adds.

Russian the attack on Ukraine prompted the Competition Commission to withdraw two Russian entries. What does Ilya Kaler, a Russian citizen with a Russian background, think about it?

“This is the way to go in some races and it can be understood in these tragic and emotional times. At the same time, of course, I am sorry for these individuals. It is up to each organization to decide, as there is no government decision to boycott all Russian citizens in such matters, as it makes sense. ”

Two Ukrainian violinists reached the finals. Dmytro Udovichenko played the concert of Dmitry Shostakovich as an optional concert.

“I understand the boycott of Russian musicians because they represent a country that has lost the opportunity to be represented through its actions. Instead, composers like Shostakovich and Prokofiev are world culture, and of course I perform their music, ”says Udovychenko.
