J-POP MANGA PRESENTS SHOWA – A JAPAN STORY BY SHIGERU MIZUKI
The touching reconstruction of the Showa era (1926 – 1989) arrives in Italy directly from those who lived it. Shigeru Mizuki becomes a precious witness to an era that saw Japan become a military power and then experience an economic crisis until the recovery of the 1980s.
Milan, 11 October 2021 – After bringing back the manga stories of The Frightening Adventures of Kitaro, Kitaro’s Disturbing Adventures And Kitaro’s Secrets between the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019, J-Pop Manga presents the second most important work of Shigeru Mizuki, pseudonym of Shigeru Mura, who passed away just six years ago. Showa: a history of Japan 1 arrives from 13 October in bookstores, comic shops and online stores. This first volume, which covers the first years of the Japanese era of the same name (1926 – 1939), is translated and edited by Marco Zappa, university professor at Ca ‘Foscari in Venice.
The Showa era, in the Japanese calendar, corresponds to the reign of Emperor Hirohito (1926 – 1989). This is the period that led Japan to first become a great military power (with a truly radical and extremist militarization process), then a defeated protagonist of the Second World War. And again later, from a post-war country in crisis to ultra-modern and successful in the 1980s. A remarkable transformation for a nation that until the beginning of the twentieth century was mainly peasant. Precious witness of the Japanese twentieth century, Shigeru Mizuki weaves two stories into a single work.
Alternating the narration of events of historical importance (economic crises, military missions in Asia of the Japanese army, revolts and attempted coups d’état) with that of his life, he gives us a complete picture of the period since he was a child in a small town provincial port, brawler and curious, in love with manga and the military epic, when he experienced the horrors of the IIGM, during which he was at the forefront in Southeast Asia, losing an arm in the clashes. And finally the recovery that led to new possibilities and consecrated him a successful mangaka in the sixties with the manga Kitaro of the cemeteries.
Showa: a history of Japan is the unmissable manga for lovers of Japan and all fans of the works of Shigeru Mizuki.
