The last qualifications of the year that decided the deployment of a Sprint Qualifying ended with the pole position of Lewis Hamilton, with the reigning champion able to outpace his direct opponent for the title, Max Verstappen, by four tenths. Immediately behind the Dutch Red Bull he occupies the second row the second silver arrow of Valtteri Bottas, in turn more than a tenth away from the current leader of the drivers’ standings.
Despite the penalty that Hamilton will serve on Sunday for replacing the internal combustion engine – which will cost the English driver a five-position retreat on the grid – the Mercedes can equally be considered satisfied with the outcome of the tests. To directly confirm this feeling was the Technical Director of the German company, Andrew Shovlin, who analyzed the result obtained at the end of the qualification:
“Looking at what we’ve done over the course of this season – commented – our goal remains to get more poles in the remaining races of this championship. Lewis has struck the right balance, stating to feel great. In Mexico, for example, he was in trouble with the rear. The sprint race will be more fun than the main one. We will see how it will evolve. It is a great challenge for us engineers – he concluded – since we only have an hour to fix the car. There is a lot of work to be done before the session. The first run wasn’t great, but in the end we managed to put it in the right window ”.
