Russia intends to prevent further bloodshed in the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR). This was stated by the head of the Russian Ministry of Defense Sergei Shoigu at a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Saturday, November 21.
Shoigu told the Prime Minister and his Armenian counterpart Vagharshak Aratyunyan about the peacekeeping operation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone, the deployment of Russian peacekeeping contingent units and observation posts on the ground, the organization of monitoring the cessation of hostilities, as well as the solution of humanitarian tasks.
“During these days we have stood practically throughout the territory of Karabakh. 23 posts were posted. We control the road to Stepanakert. We ensure the return of refugees. Now a peaceful life has already been established. And from our side, the main task is to prevent bloodshed. This is the task that our Supreme Commander-in-Chief set before us, ”said the Russian Defense Minister.
The head of the Armenian government expressed hope for strengthening relations with Russia in the field of security and the military-industrial complex.
“Of course, before the war (the escalation of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh – Ed.) there was a difficult period, but now is a more difficult time, we hope that during this period we will be able to deepen our cooperation with the Russian Federation, including in the field of security, not only security, but also in the field of military-technical cooperation, “- leads agency a message from the press service of the Armenian government with reference to the words of Pashinyan.
The head of the republic’s cabinet noted that the military-political situation in the region has changed. He expressed hope for the deepening in the near future and in the strategic perspective of the Armenian-Russian ties “in the spirit of strategic cooperation and fraternal friendship.”
The press service added that Pashinyan called Shoigu’s visit very important.
“I would like to note that during the war we have always felt the support of the Russian Federation, the President of Russia, the Prime Minister, your personal support. I want to thank you for this, ”the prime minister said addressing the Russian minister.
Shoigu arrived in Yerevan earlier on Saturday. The Russian delegation, which arrived in the Armenian capital on Saturday, also included: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko and head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova, said TASS in the interdepartmental delegation. Its members will meet with Pashinyan.
On the eve of Shoigu, at a meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with the Russian peacekeeping mission in Karabakh, he said that the NKR territory is completely controlled by peacekeepers. He stressed that a total of 250 aircraft flights were made there, 1960 people and 552 pieces of equipment were transported.
The Russian leader called the work of the peacekeepers in Karabakh clear and well-coordinated.
Earlier, on November 9, Putin, Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an agreement on the complete cessation of hostilities in Karabakh. The document also provides for the introduction of Russian peacekeepers into the region, the exchange of prisoners between the parties to the conflict, the transfer of a number of regions of the region by Armenia to Azerbaijan and the return of refugees to the NKR.
