Is there a historical sensation in this boot? An expedition team may have found the foot of the first person to climb Mount Everest.
Kathmandu – A spooky discovery on Mount Everest and at the same time perhaps the solution to a 100-year-old mystery? Below the north wall, a team led by Oscar director Jimmy Chin came across a shoe – complete with a foot.
Sensational find on Mount Everest: Team may find historic boots belonging to Andrew Irvine
So what makes an old boot a sensation? As tragic as it is, there are a number of bodies buried in the snow on Mount Everest. But this find could be historic.
In the shoe, Chin discovered a sock with an embroidery on it with the name “AC Irvine” – supposedly the first person to conquer the highest mountain in the world. “We were all literally running in circles and throwing F-bombs,” says the Oscar winner. Pure ecstasy from the National Geographic team.
However, there is a mystery surrounding the 1924 expedition of Andrew Irvine and his mountain partner George Mallory. To this day it is unclear whether the British actually reached the summit of Mount Everest – Reinhold Messner, for example, does not believe it. Officially, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay are considered the first climbers.
“It’s the real proof”: Boot discovery could solve Mount Everest mystery – family enables DNA comparison
Mallory’s body was found in the snow in 1999, and there has been no trace of Irvine until now. “It’s the first real evidence of where Sandy (Irvine’s nickname, dR) landed,” Chin said at National Geographic. Has his team solved the greatest mountaineering mystery of all time?
Irvine’s niece Julia Summers believes she has at least one promising lead on her hands. “It tells the whole story of what probably happened,” she said of the boot. “I see it as something that is close to completion.” The family has agreed to provide DNA samples that will be compared with the remains from the shoe. And then the great Mount Everest mystery may be revealed – over 100 years after the fatal expedition. (moe)
