Mexico City.- One day after the clash on Line 3, the capital’s Finance Secretary assured that the Metro has “sufficient resources” for operation, maintenance and renovation, however, it handled figures that disagree with official documents.
In response to the criticism, Luz Elena González assured on Sunday that the budget of the Collective Transport System (STC) has not only not been reduced, but has been increased.
“Between 2022 and 2023 (…) it increases its budget by 857 million pesos,” he commented at the conference led by the Head of Government, Claudia Sheinbaum.
“And compared to 2021, the budget growth is 25.5 percent, going from 15 thousand 684 million pesos to 19 thousand 687 million pesos, which represents an increase in resources of 4 billion pesos.”
The first discrepancy is that, according to the CDMX Expenditure Budget for 2023 published in the Official Gazette, the Metro will have a budget for this year of 18 thousand 847 million pesos and not 19 thousand 687.
This means that there will be an increase, but it will only be 19.3 million pesos and not 857, as the official magnified.
And it remains to consider inflation, which specialists surveyed by Banxico estimate at 4.99. If this figure is maintained, the resources for this year will be equivalent to only 17,951.90 million pesos, that is, there will be an increase on paper, but a reduction in purchasing power in reality.
The other inconsistency is that between the exercised budget of 2021 and the one approved for 2023 there is a difference of 20.1 percent and not 25.5, as González presumed.
Grupo REFORMA consulted on Sunday with the Ministry of Finance to find out the origin of the figures that its owner handled, however, until the closing of the edition there was no response.

After the collision of two trains between the Potrero and La Raza stations, which caused the death of a university student and injured more than 100, the Opposition attacked the state of deterioration and the financial management of the capital’s main transportation system.
City officials, legislators and politicians from Morena have tried to defend themselves by ensuring that any criticism means politically profiting from the tragedy, in addition, they have replicated the sufficiency of resources that González spoke of.
