Shipping traffic on the Main is disrupted due to a broken lock.
Wertheim am Main – Shipping traffic on the Main is disrupted due to a broken lock. Because a freight ship destroyed a lock gate on the border between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg on Saturday and the Eichel lock was closed, no ships could sail on the route, said a spokeswoman for the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping in Bonn on Monday. “In concrete terms, that means that all ships coming from the Rhine or the Danube cannot currently pass through the Main in transit traffic.”
The shipping traffic in the greater Frankfurt area up to the Main lock is not impaired. This also applies to the stretch from the Danube to Eichel. There are now around 35 ships waiting above and below the lock to continue their journey. There would certainly be more, said the spokeswoman. The lock should be closed until Wednesday. The Main is one of the most important shipping routes in Germany.
The cargo ship was loaded with 1000 tons of artificial fertilizer and drove towards Aschaffenburg on Saturday and, according to the police, could no longer brake in time in the lock. A gate was damaged and needs to be replaced. (dpa)
