After 10 years at Tango Gameworks, last year it was revealed that Shinji Mikami had left the studio he created in 2013. Although he has currently established a new team, The developer has finally spoken about this unexpected decision, and his future in the industry.
In a recent interview with Byking, Mikami revealed that he had been planning to leave Tango GameWorks for eight yearsbut he stayed within the company because he felt a commitment to the projects they were working on, such as The Evil Within 2, Hi-Fi Rush and Ghostwire: Tokyo.
With this, Mikami revealed that the ZeniMax Media acquisition changed his perception of the company quite a bit, since he took on a role other than CEO, and fought to keep the Tango Gameworks name. This is what he said about it:
“I had only been general director for 6 months. I think a lot of people were under the impression that I was the representative, but I was very close to a rank-and-file employee. “I had ‘___ producer’ attached to my name, but I wasn’t an executive or anything.”
The most interesting thing is that Mikami reveals that his main motivation for leaving Tango Gameworks was the desire to create an environment that allows young game creators to have more frequent opportunities to gain experience, that is, an environment with shorter development cycles between new projects. At the same time, he felt there was an audience for unique, smaller-scale video games, which led him to see an opportunity to link these two factors.
The second reason you mention Mikami is his personal desire to break free from the survival horror game genre he has become associated with.. While the developer is currently working on the remastering of Shadows of the Damnedonce this project comes to an end, it is very likely that we will see Kamuy's first work. We can only wait to see what will happen with Mikami in the future. In related topics, Phil Spencer talks about the developer's departure. Likewise, Mikami talks about a new study.
Author's Note:
Shinji Mikami clearly wants to do something different and focus his efforts on creating an environment where new developers have the opportunity to experiment with their ideas in a safe place. It is an interesting proposal that will benefit many.
