Mexico City.- One of the 100 commitments for the next six years that President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke yesterday in the Zócalo was to disappear the exam of the Metropolitan Commission of Public Institutions of Higher Secondary Education (Comipems).
“In the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico, the Comipems exam is going to disappear. Let them (students) go to the school that is closest to their home,” he said.
Since his campaign for the presidency, he promised to eliminate this test because, in his opinion, all students should enter the high school closest to their home. According to the president, the secondary school certificate from the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) should be taken into account to access high school without the need to take an exam.
Currently, every year Comipems organizes the upper secondary education placement contest. Those who aspire to enter a campus of the institutions that make up Comipems, including the IPN and the UNAM, must take an exam with 128 multiple-choice questions. Those with the highest scores are more likely to be admitted to the school of their choice.
The head of the Executive Branch clarified in July that she will not impose anything on UNAM because it is an autonomous institution. Under the current model, the schools of the National Preparatory School (ENP) and the College of Sciences and Humanities (CCH) are the most in demand. Both belong to the Maximum House of Studies. In 2023, for example, more than 20 candidates competed for each place in the ENP 6 “Antonio Caso”, located in Coyoacán. “We are going to strengthen public high schools, upper secondary education. The objective is that all those who leave high school have a space to continue their studies and not abandon school. “All high school students already have scholarships, but let’s to make more preparatory schools throughout the country,” declared the president in the Plaza de la Constitución. As part of commitment number 31, Sheinbaum also shared measures around higher education: he will consolidate the Universities for Well-being “Benito Juárez García”, She will make the two universities created in Mexico City during her time as Head of Government national (the Rosario Castellanos University and the Health University) and set the goal of increasing at least 300 thousand spaces in universities.
