Claudia Sheinbaum, head of government of Mexico City, stressed this Wednesday that the march for International Women’s Day was a large peaceful mobilization and expressed her gratitude to the police of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) who supported the demonstrations.
“My greatest recognition, my thanks to the policewomen who have really earned a very special place in the hearts of the inhabitants of this city,” said the president of the capital at a press conference, after the presentation of the Spring Festival in the Historical Center.
“We are very happy because it was a peaceful march, this is a city of freedoms and there were really thousands of women, also men, but mainly women who marched peacefully, I think we should congratulate ourselves on this,” said the president.
There were around 75,000 attendees, according to the SSC, very long, which started around 1:00 p.m., and the last contingents left late at night, explained the president of the capital.
In their report, the Secretaries of Government and Citizen Security reported that in the demonstration that took place this March 8, an attendance of 75 thousand participants was registered, mostly peacefully.
“It is very good for the city that it has been mainly peaceful, with a demonstration of women demanding their rights and equality, and that is part of democracy and freedom,” Sheinbaum said.
The mayor of Mexico City reported that there were some episodes of violence, with groups that normally cause damage with dangerous objects, which were isolated by the demonstration itself, “I think it was good.”
And above all, added the head of government, for a period part of the most violent activities was concentrated in front of the fences of the National Palace, although it indicates that it was very minority.
Police training
Sheinbaum said that she would highlight as the most important the vindication of women’s rights and the peaceful march, and on the other hand the performance of the work of policewomen.
“I think that the work of recognizing the work of the compañeras has been very important, from the first demonstrations to date. The training they have had in a very important way, in many ways,” she explained.
“It is not only a formation and training of police containment, but also of gender perspective, everything we have done within the Police to defend the rights of the police”
He commented that there were very moving scenes of protesters giving flowers to the police, or applauding their participation, or the officers themselves joining the demonstrations.
