The first trailer for the live action of “The Little Mermaid” offered a first look at Halle Bailey as the daughter of King Triton. The preview included a snippet of the iconic song “Part of Him,” thanks to which the lead actress received praise for her performance. However, what is still generating debate on networks (with marked racist overtones) is the choice of the artist for the main role.
Many accused Disney of “forced inclusion” because the animated princess is fair-skinned while Bailey is of African-American descent. In that sense, a user on Twitter compared the new Little Mermaid with Rachel Zegler, who will be Snow White in her own live action movie.
“Hey Disney, I actually think Rachel Zegler is a good fit for the role of Snow White because she looks like her. But Halle Bailey is #NotMyAriel. She can be the Little Mermaid on Broadway if she wants to, but not in a movie,” the hater commented.
The princess answers
What the netizen, identified as Liam Webster, never imagined is that he would receive a response from one of the aforementioned actresses. Specifically, it was Zegler who decided to teach the user a lesson and his comment went viral.
“If you don’t support my girl Halle, who is the perfect Ariel, you don’t support any of us.”, can be read in the tweet of the interpreter of Snow White, which already accumulates more than 11 thousand likes.
Let’s remember that the protagonist of “Love without barriers” has not been exempt from hate either. When it was announced that she was going to play the famous Snow White, she was also the subject of criticism on networks, which increased when some images were leaked from the filming set.
For now, it is expected that Disney will not be forced to modify its strategy for the premiere of “The Little Mermaid” (May 2023) or “Snow White” (March 2024), as fans of the princesses are eager to see how animated classics will be brought to life on the big screen.
