Almost 70 million km traveled by scooter in the main European cities. This is the first figure that stands out in the analysis on shared mobility by Lime, the sharing company that has released the details on the use of e-scooters in some capitals of the Old Continent where the service offered is active. In particular, the report on the first six months of 2024 concerns Madrid, Copenhagen, Rome, Milan, Paris, Berlin and Lisbon.
Paris in the lead
In these seven cities and in the first six months of 2024 alone, Paris tops the list for the highest number of kilometers traveled with a total of 14 million km. While in the top 5 we find two Italian cities: Rome with 5 million km (2nd) and Milan with 2.5 million km (4th). In third place, Berlin with almost 4 million km, followed by Lisbon with just over 1 million. In terms of environmental impact on cities, thanks to the use of micromobility, over 16,000 tons of CO2 emissions have been avoided and more than 5 million car trips have been eliminated.
Why do we use a scooter?
Lime then asked European users about the reasons that drive them to choose sustainable micromobility to live in the city. In terms of use, shared bicycles and scooters are considered the best option mainly for commuting and intermodality, especially for Lisbon (22%) and Madrid (20%) followed by reasons of socializing in free time (Paris with 25% and Madrid with 24%) and in general for the offer of an alternative and more sustainable type of transport than the private car (Paris and Lisbon the most virtuous with 13%).
The report on Italy
The report then also analyzed the situation in Italy. In Rome, Italian users have eliminated over half a million car trips by choosing to travel with Lime transport, while in Milan well over a million cars have been removed from traffic. Users in these two cities have saved over 4,000 tons of CO2 emissions. As for the reasons that drive their use in Italy, the majority of Romans choose bicycles and electric scooters for commuting (23%), a figure that reaches 33% in Milan. This is followed by travel related to conviviality, such as reaching cafés or restaurants (18%), motivations associated with sustainability (17%) and finally for reasons related to shopping (10%).
