Looking pale and frail, the 72-year-old Weinstein was present in the courtroom, sitting in a wheelchair. A little over a week ago, he was rushed from a New York prison to a hospital for heart surgery.
Weinstein is currently serving a 16-year sentence after being convicted of rape in the state of California. He was also sentenced in New York in 2020 to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual abuse.
However, the New York Court of Appeals overturned the latter conviction last April, and Weinstein has been awaiting a retrial on the charges. It was supposed to start on November 12, but prosecutors said Wednesday they thought the date was unrealistic.
At the end of the last decade, Weinstein was at the center of the me too campaign that spread through social media, when numerous women reported that they had been harassed or raped by Weinstein.
