Sexual assaults treated at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona increase by 6.3%

The study, which includes data related to the victim and the attack, as well as the use of emergency care, concludes that 44% of the attacks were committed in under 25 years old and that 6.25% of the attacks were on women aged 16 and 17. In the last five years, the Clínic has treated a total of 2,726 cases of sexual assault in the Emergency Service.

Regarding the type of sexual assaults, the report highlights that the 57.5% of women were raped (vaginal, anal and/or oral), but it should be taken into account that 29% do not remember. In men, 60.5% suffered anal or oral penetration, but the remaining 25% did not remember. The statistics also show that one in ten sexual assaults attended to were group attacks.

Regarding the place where the attack was committed, 56% of attacks on women were committed in a home -last year it was 49.7%-. 14.6% of women were attacked on public roads, while 10.8% of the attacks occurred in nightlife venues (bathrooms of nightclubs, bars…).

Likewise, 3.2% of the attacks were against homeless people. Of these, 21% were in groups. In eight out of ten sexual assaults on women living on the street there was rape. The group of homeless people is, as the authors of the report emphasize, “a high-risk group with special needs to access health monitoring and recovery programs.”

On the other hand, 63% of the women assisted say having consumed alcohol, at least six hours before the attack. While in 47% of attacks on women there are indicators that show that the action has occurred in a context of alcohol or drug intoxication that can alter the state of consciousness.

Another conclusion of the report is that a quarter of the women under 45 years of age assisted are raped by an acquaintance in an environment that could be considered safe.
