The offensive has been launched from Iran and authorities have confirmed that no Americans have been injured.
At least 12 ballistic missiles have hit in the vicinity of the US consulate in the city of Erbil, in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, northern Iraq.
The attack, which occurred around 1:00 a.m. local time (10:00 p.m. in Spain), has not left any fatalities for the moment, although it has caused extensive material damage, including the building of the Kurdistan 24 television network, as reported by ‘Rudaw’.
The Prime Minister of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Masrur Barzani, has “strongly” condemned the “terrorist attack”. “Erbil does not succumb to threats. I strongly condemn this terrorist attack in various parts of Erbil and ask the brave people of Erbil to be patient and follow the instructions of the security services,” Barzani explained on his Facebook profile.
On the other hand, the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mustafa Al Kadhimi, has considered the attack on the city of Erbil as an “aggression” against the Iraqi people.
“Our security forces will investigate this attack and we will deter any violation of the security of our cities and the safety of our people,” the Iraqi prime minister said, as reported by Shafaq News.
At the moment the author of the attacks is unknown, although some local media suggest that the missiles could have been manufactured in Iran.
