The train is still one of the favorite means of transport for Italians, with a very high rate of adoption of new technologies for booking tickets. According to a recent study conducted by YouGov and commissioned by Trainline, 76% of Italians express a strong appreciation for train travel, exceeding the 72% recorded at a European level. The analysis reveals that in the past three years, three-quarters of the Italian population has traveled more than once by train, demonstrating the importance of this means of transport in the national context. This propensity for rail travel is not limited to Italy alone: in fact, Spain follows with 71% and the United Kingdom with 65%.
The most notable change in the rail industry over the past 25 years has been in the method of purchasing tickets. While it was once common to buy them directly at the station or by telephone, today 70% of Italians prefer purchasing online. The figure stands slightly above the European average, which stands at 67%. Comfort during travel represents the main reason why Italians choose the train, followed by convenience and sustainability. The latter aspect appears to be particularly important for young people aged between 18 and 24, highlighting a growing interest in greener travel options. The speed of the train is also recognized as a further significant advantage.
When it comes to tourism, 62% of Europeans choose the train for domestic holidays, with the UK (77%) and Germany (62%) leading the table. In Italy, more than half of the population (56%) opts for the train for short holidays and long weekends, ranking well above the European average of 46%. The prospect of using the train for foreign holidays is equally popular, with 81% of European respondents planning to choose this means of transport for trips abroad, with a marked preference among young people.
“Italians are not only at the forefront of Europe when it comes to showing how proud they are of train travel, they have quickly adopted online ticketing and are also avid users of the most sustainable form of passenger transport there is. In recent years, Italian passengers have changed like Trainline, whose evolution is itself a journey through years of innovation and investments that have allowed us to become one of the most successful technology companies and the most downloaded mobility app in Italy” , comments Andrea Saviane, Country Manager of Trainline in Italy.
