Eleven people were hospitalized and seven smuggling suspects were detained Thursday after authorities found more than two dozen migrants who had been transported from the border crammed into a secret compartment of a trailer with little water and sweltering heat.
Bexar County (BEAR) Sheriff Javier Salazar reported that, acting on a tip about a smuggling operation, authorities followed the trailer to a rural residence outside of San Antonio. A total of 26 migrants were found at the scene, of which 11 were taken to a hospital with minor heat-related injuries, Salazar said.
The smuggling operation came two days after President Joe Biden unveiled plans to immediately impose significant restrictions on migrants seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border, in an attempt by the White House to neutralize migration. ahead of the November elections.
