The 2024 European elections are just around the corner. A recent poll shows a clear trend. A traffic light party is recording losses and the Union is making a comeback.
Berlin/Brussels – There are only a few days left until the European elections and the current polls show a clear trend: In Germany, the union of the CSU and CDU could become the strongest force on election Sunday. According to a pre-election survey by infratest dimap for the ARD Deutschlandtrend, the CDU and CSU would receive 29 percent. Other parties have to fear for their votes.
Current poll for the 2024 European elections: Union reaches almost 30 percent
The current ARD trend for the European elections also shows in the survey that the SPD is at 15 percent, while the Greens and AfD are each at 14 percent. The AfD has repeatedly made headlines in the run-up to the European elections. Among others, the European candidate Maximilian Krah was the center of attention. Despite a ban on appearances by the AfD leadership, the politician did not miss the opportunity to appear in the election campaign. The Bild newspaper reported that Krah was standing in front of a shopping center in Dresden on Wednesday afternoon wearing a blue AfD jacket.
Krah had assured his party leadership that he would not appear at any events. Bild now quotes Krah as saying: “Putting up posters with the local group without the press is not an election campaign appearance. That is grassroots work.”
Greens lose ground in European election poll: Party loses over six percent
The current poll for the European elections puts the newly founded Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) coalition at 6 percent, the FDP at 4 percent and the Left at 3 percent. Compared to a poll by the same institute at the beginning of May, the changes are small. According to the WDR says that the European election survey is representative. 1,515 eligible voters were surveyed from Monday to Wednesday. The broadcaster explicitly points out that this is not a forecast, “but rather the political mood in the current week.”
What is particularly striking in comparison to the last European elections in 2019 is that the Greens in particular are losing ground. At that time, the party was still at over 20 percent and has now fallen by 6.5 percent in the current election poll. The AfD was able to improve by 3 percentage points compared to 2019.
European elections 2024 are just around the corner: social problems dominate the vote
This year’s European elections come at a time of turmoil: the effects of the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East are dominating current social debates. Ahead of the European elections, the Central Council of Jews is very concerned about the rise of parties on the right and left. “I have to be honest, compared to 2019, I see the situation today as even more dramatic,” said Central Council President Josef Schuster to the German Press Agency. “Overall, there is a high level of support for populist parties on the left and right in the EU.” (fbu/dpa)
