Serena Williams has left her future open after her defeat at Wimbledon. The 40-year-old American, 23-time grand slam winner, hinted at an extension of her career after her comeback after a year of absence.
Asked about whether her game on Tuesday could be her last, the former number 1 in the world replied: ,,That’s a question I can’t answer right now. Who knows? Who knows where I will turn up?”
Williams last came into action in July of last year. Earlier this month, she surprised somewhat by accepting a Wimbledon wildcard. On Tuesday evening, Williams lost to the French Harmony Tan in a compelling fight of more than 3 hours.
“Physically I was fine, only at the last few points I really started to feel it. But I moved well and had a lot of balls back. That was no surprise to me. I just didn’t train for 3-hour duels. I think it went wrong there,” Williams said.
“I certainly wouldn’t be at peace with this if this were my last memory, absolutely not. This definitely gives me motivation to get back on the training tracks, as I didn’t play badly and came so close.”
Not much is clear about the coming months, but participation in the US Open is certainly a possibility. “Playing at home, in a place where I won my first grand slam, is always special. There is definitely a lot of motivation to get better and play at home.”
Williams last won a Grand Slam tournament in 2017. More than five years ago she won the Australian Open.
