The defeat was hard to swallow for Serena, but the will of the 40-year-old American tennis legend to win dominated the thrilling match, which lasted two hours and 27 minutes.
Serena had indicated her intention to retire earlier this month, saying that she was “evolving away from tennis”, but she has never confirmed that the US Open will be her last.
But any farewell has now been postponed with Serena returning to center court on Thursday in a doubles match with her older sister Venus, followed by a third-round clash with Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, who beat Russia’s Evgenia Rodina 1-6 6-2 7-5.
