Irenaeus died at the age of 90 due to complications from coronavirus infection.
According to information BBC, the patriarch has been undergoing treatment at the Karaburma hospital since November 4. The test results confirmed the infection with the coronavirus. The day before, the priest was connected to a ventilator.
Patriarch Iriney (Gavrilovich) was born on August 28, 1930 in the village of Vidova, baptized as Miroslav. In 1951 he graduated from the theological seminary in Prizren, the theological faculty of the University of Belgrade and graduate school at the theological faculty of the University of Athens.
After graduating from the university he served in the Yugoslav army.
In October 1959 he took monastic vows. He was elected Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church in January 2010.
Irenaeus opposed the independence of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the decision of the Patriarchate of Constantinople to grant autocephaly to the OCU without the consent of other Orthodox churches.
Under Patriarch Irenaeus, the Serbian Orthodox Church actively established contacts with big business, including Russian.
