Senegalese President Macky Sall said on Wednesday that 11 infants died in a fire in the neonatal ward of a regional hospital in the town of Tiawon, about 120 km east of the capital, Dakar.
“Just learned of the sad and horrific news of the death of 11 infants in the fire that erupted in the neonatal ward of … Abdelaziz Sa Dabbagh Hospital in Tiawon,” Sall wrote on Twitter.
Sall, who is in Angola on an official visit, gave no further details about the fire.
“According to preliminary investigations, a short circuit caused the fire,” Health Minister Abdullah Diouf Sar told private TV channel TFM.
Sarr, who is in Geneva to participate in the meetings of the World Health Assembly, added that he would cut the trip and return to Senegal immediately.
Dimba Diop Si, mayor of Tiawon, one of Senegal’s holy cities and a transport hub, said police and firefighters were still in hospital, but he did not provide further details.
