Senegal, people's anger explodes: “Constitutional coup d'état”. Clashes in the streets
A new “hot” front opens up Africa. This time it's wobbly one of the countries considered the most stable politically of the entire continent: the Senegal. The news of postponement of the electionsscheduled for February 25th, or even next Decembercaused the anger of the Senegalese who poured into the streets. This decision – we read in Repubblica – is considered a sort of coup of the current president Sall, in office since 2012 and re-elected in 2019, a move to counter the advance of sovereignist forces. According to the opposition, Sall's decision is a “constitutional coup“, in a country where the presidential elections were held canceled and postponed only oncein the far 1967and where there has never been a military coup – as, however, practically everywhere in the rest of the continent. An example of democracy and long also with encouraging economic prospects, Senegal has fallen into a crisis in recent years new phase of crisis and uncertaintyreturning to fuel the migratory flow from sub-Saharan Africa to Europe.

Last Sunday – continues Repubblica – they began demonstrations against Sall in Dakar. The police intervened with tear gas and a certain brutality. Not only that: Anta Babacar Ngom, also a presidential candidate, and Aminata Touré, former prime minister (now in the opposition) were arrested and then released during the night between Sunday and Monday. The Government has blocked the broadcasts of the private Walf TV, accused of fomenting unrest by giving space to images of the event. Yesterday, again, a few hundred demonstrators gathered in front of the National Assembly, while the deputies were discussing the measure wanted by Sall, and they were dispersed with the tear gas. Yesterday morning the Government also Internet blocked on mobile telephony in several neighborhoods of Dakar, as it had already done in June 2023. The goal is limit demonstrations organized on social media.
