An attempt by an American destroyer to violate the border with Russia was made in order to check the combat readiness of the Russian troops, the operation of radar reconnaissance systems, said a member of the Federation Council Andrei Klimov. In a conversation with “Lenta.ru” the senator explained that by performing such actions, the States are pursuing political goals as well.
The Russian ship “Admiral Tributs” earlier on October 15, according to the Ministry of Defense, ousted the American destroyer “Chafee” from the Russian territorial waters in the Sea of Japan, observing international rules. “The URO destroyer Chafee, convinced of the determination of the Russian ship’s crew not to violate the state border, changed direction and at 17:50 turned back on the opposite course, when there was less than 60 meters left to the Admiral Tributs,” the Defense Ministry said.
Klimov noted that similar actions on the part of the American armed forces are not being undertaken for the first or the last time. He also compared such moves to the Cold War period.
“American military doctrine involves annoying actions in order to test combat response systems, how radar reconnaissance works, how troops on the ground interact, how warships respond,” the senator explained. “And at the same time, the United States also pursues political goals: they show that they have not gone anywhere, they are nearby, and still pose a threat.”
The politician stressed that Russia will not pretend that nothing has happened, the necessary actions will be taken along diplomatic lines. The military also has special protocols designed for such a case.
“We have already seen all this. Exactly the same thing happened during the Cold War, and it is repeated now. But our nerves are strong, and the opportunities to respond are very serious. The Americans know this, ”Klimov concluded.
The Chafee’s attempt to cross the Russian border in the Sea of Japan was reported earlier on 15 October. It was noted that the US destroyer, operating in the Sea of Japan for several days, approached the territorial waters of Russia.
