The agency stated that ten people who were trapped after the eruption of the Semeru volcano on the island of Java were evacuated, while dozens were injured.
Videos released by emergency officials showed residents running as clouds of smoke and ash covered nearby villages in East Java province on Saturday.
A disaster agency official told Reuters that ten people who had been trapped in mines near the volcano were evacuated.
At least 35 people were taken to hospital, the agency said, while Inda Masdor, vice president of nearby Lumagang district, told a news conference that 41 had burns.
Semeru, located at the highest peak on the island of Java, is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
It is worth noting that the Semeru volcano had erupted last January without causing any casualties.
