Handjob Sammy published the financial report for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024, where the company recorded positive results in terms of revenues and operating income, thanks to the results of Rovio and the excellent sales of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Persona 3 Reload.
Looking at the precise numbers, Sega scored 468 billion yen (approximately 2.79 billion euros) in revenueswith an increase of 20% year on year, 56.8 billion yen (approximately 338 million euros) in operating income, with a growth of 22% and profits of 33.1 billion yen (approximately 197 million euros) .
Profits fell 28% on an annual basis, a result which is not however seen as negative by the company, as it is attributable to the costs for the corporate restructuring that is taking place for its offices in Europe (which unfortunately also caused cuts in staff), so much so that As we’ll see later, the company is adding profit growth for the current fiscal year, net of a decrease in overall revenue.
Persona and Like a Dragon grow, Sonic declines
The revenue growth is attributed to positive performances in Japan and Asia, the revenues recorded thanks to Rovio, the Angry Birds company acquired by Sega last year, and sales of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Persona 3 Reload.
Both reached altitude 1 million copies sold within the first week since their debut in stores and have surpassed the records set by the previous chapters of the respective series. We previously spoke about the excellent results of the Persona series as a whole during the last year, capable of selling 5.06 million copies, +55% year on year, while for Like a Dragon sales amounted to 5 .36 million copies, +89% on an annual basis.
This also has narrowed the gap with the Sonic franchiseSega’s most successful one, which in the last fiscal year totaled 5.92 million copies sold, down 27% on an annual basis.
Looking ahead, Sega expects its current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2025) to see sales decline 5% and operating profit decline nearly 21%, while profits will increase 18%.
